The Healthy Youth survey includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, risk and protective factors, access to school-based services, and sexual behaviors, abuse and orientation. Survey results are used by schools, communities and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.

West Seattle High School was chosen by Washington Green Schools as 2014 recipient for a STATE-WIDE DAY OF SERVICE! On October 11, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, around 50 WGS volunteers, including highly-skilled gardeners and carpenters, will converge upon West Seattle High School’s planting areas to help us improve and beautify our rain garden, and our flower and edibles beds (on the Southeast side of our building, right off Walnut Street). They will also work with us on the Steps at Stevens Project on the California Avenue side of our building, clearing an area around the school sign, and planting some beautiful trees near the parking lot! In addition to fifty dedicated and talented volunteers, WGS is supplying arborist chips, lumber, and delicious refreshments. They are donating their superlative work to us, asking only that some of our students, staff, and families come out and join the garden and grounds beautification fun! There will be cameras aplenty! So, please come out with us on October 11, smile and say, ‘GREEN SCHOOLS!’
Leigh Michael from Washington Green Schools will be coming to school to plan logistics with some of us on Monday. Leigh can envision 3-4 task groups being formed, and she would like to see a West Seattle High School teacher, administrator, student or parent leader captaining each group. . .so colleagues, students and parents, please step forward here, and volunteer to take a group around!
Please share this e-mail widely with anyone you know in our wonderful West Seattle High School community! All students who volunteer on October 11 will earn community service hours. I will have the forms to give them on-site, and if anyone is looking for other GREEN VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES, there are some coming up with the YMCA, and right here at school, with our flourishing school compost and recycling program! Don’t hesitate to ask, and feel free to call or e-mail me with any questions, or to volunteer!
Thanks very much!
