You must complete your registration by end of April or your courses will be selected for you.

Frequently asked Questions compiled from our Rising 9th grade webinar:

  1. For people in HCC classes, does that carry over into high school?
Yes- you will have the option to take advanced classes at WSHS as well
  2. I’ve applied for something else, but since the interview hasn’t happened yet I don’t know if I’ve gotten in- should I still sign up for classes?
Yes- please go ahead and sign up for classes at WSHS to ensure your spot
  3. How do credits from certain classes this year (like high school math and world language) get counted?
Those credits and grades are automatically added to your HS transcript if you’re coming from an SPS middle school
  4. Can you do both concert band and jazz band?
Yes. Concert Band is open to anyone and Jazz Band is audition-only. For more information on WSHS music programs and tryouts visit www.wshsmusic.org
  5. Do I have to take Health and PE freshman year?
Yes. The only exception to this is if you are planning on enrolling in BOTH band/orchestra and a world language as you will not have room in your schedule
  6. For student who took 2+ years of a world language in middle school- do we start at Level 2 in high school?
That is up to you. Typically students who have taken 2 years of world language in MS are prepared to start at Level 2 in high school, but you also have the opportunity to start again at Level 1. We encourage talking to your current world language teacher to get their feedback regarding your readiness to start at Level 2.
  7. Do I need a teacher recommendation to get into Honors?
No, at this time our classes offer embedded Honors and you opt in to the Honors option through your teacher at the beginning of the school year. You don’t need to register separately for Honors classes or get a teacher’s recommendation
  8. Can I waive PE credits?
.5 credits of Personal Fitness are required. You can waive the additional 1.0 credits required if you play a sport for WSHS or another club sport outside of school (one season of a sport=.5 credit waived)
  9. How many years of World Language are required for graduation?
World Language is not required for gradation, however, it is required for college entry. Colleges will expect two years of the same consecutive language (so, for example, Spanish 1 AND 2 not Spanish 1 and Chinese 1)

Important Reminders and Notes

Special Education students should complete the online registration if they are SPS students. Non-SPS students with Special Education services will complete the registration.

English Learner (EL) students should complete the online registration if they are SPS students. Non-SPS students with EL services will complete the paper registration Option Sheet and email the completed form to their assigned WSHS counselor.

Honors classes: West Seattle High School offers 9th and 10th grade honors options in some of our core academic areas. As we come into alignment with the other SPS high schools, how we offer honors in grade 9 and 10 is changing in some content areas. The option for honors will be available and embedded in most Language Arts, World History, and Math courses.

Math placements are determined by 8th grade courses: If your student is taking 8th Grade Math, they will register for Algebra 1; Algebra 1 students should register for Geometry; Geometry students should register for Algebra 2.

Health and Personal Fitness: All 9th grade students take Health and Personal Fitness.

Jazz Band is offered 0-period. Mr. Thomas will be in touch with interested students. If you have questions please email Mr. Thomas at etthomas1@seattleschools.org.

World Language: If you are choosing the first year of any world language, please list an alternate language on the alternate elective line.

Important policy on Yearlong Scheduling: West Seattle High School students register for the following year’s classes in the spring. Both semesters’ courses are selected at this time. Students will remain with the same teacher for the full year in yearlong courses. Students should choose courses carefully as schedule changes are extremely limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Option Sheet and Four-Year Plan documents required to submit before registration?
No, they are tools to help you figure out your remaining graduation requirements and help you select your classes for next year

Do I have to have my parent(s)/guardian(s) sign?
It’s not required, but we recommend you review your classes with your parent/guardian(s)

Do seniors get first choice in classes?
Yes, once all of the info is entered, counselors do check senior schedules first to help make sure seniors get the classes that they need and want for college admissions/graduation.

What happens if I don’t pick my classes before the due date?
Your counselor gets to choose all of your classes for you!

Why do we need alternate courses?
Sometimes classes fill up or they just don’t work in your schedule.  Your alternate choices let the counselors know what your 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices are so that you get classes that you want and don’t have to wait in LONG lines outside the counselor’s office at the start of the year.

What if I want to be a TA?
Choose an elective for the time being and make a note on your option sheet indicating that you would like to TA for next year. It will be your responsibility to get the TA form signed at the beginning of the year. Only juniors and seniors can be TA’s.

What if I know I’m transferring or taking classes at Running Start?
You need to sign up for classes anyway! We would rather get you the classes you want and pull you out later if you do move or take Running Start classes.

What if I failed a class? Can I re-take it?
Generally you can’t retake classes and will need to make up failed classes during summer school.  See your counselor with questions.

**Any specific/individual questions can be referred back to the student’s counselor**
