      Annual LGBT Families Dinner - Thurs

      LGBT FamiliesThe annual lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Families Dinner will be held 6-8 PM, this Thursday, Nov. 2 at Meany Middle School. Members of the school board will be there to welcome LGBT families and their friends. All SPS students, families and staff are welcome to attend! This this donation-funded event is brought to you by the Health Education Office. Dinner and entertainment will be provided.       Saturday School Begins

      Study HallThe Tutoring Center is a huge asset to the students at WSHS. If your student is in need of additional support with any subject - encourage them to attend the next Saturday School from 9 AM-12 PM on Saturday, November 4. Tutors will be on hand to help with make up tests/quizzes, projects or homework. Take advantage of this FREE service to our students!

      SPS Financial Aid Event

      Financial AidFinancial experts and trained volunteers will be on hand to assist students with completing college applications and financial aid forms. The FAFSA and WAFSA opened on Oct 1 - completing this form is the first step in accessing college financial aid. It is required for most scholarships, grants and loans so any student planning to attend college or university post graduation should file now. The event in West Seattle will be held at Chief Sealth HS on Monday, November 7 from 4-6 PM. Visit this website for a list of what to bring to file the FAFSA or WAFSA.

      SPS Special Education SW Regional Meeting - Nov 8

      AttentionThe Special Education Department of Seattle Public Schools is hosting Regional Meetings for staff, families and the community. We will provide information about changes in special education in the department and in schools. We also want to hear from you!       SBAC Testing

      testingAll Juniors will take the SBAC November 7, 8 and 9. Passing the SBAC exams are mandatory for graduation. Seniors may retake the SBAC between now and November 17th. Running Start students must also pass this exam. If you are not sure if your student needs to take this test, please contact Amy Doll at with questions about the testing status. Seniors may arrange for a pass to report to the library during school for testing. Don't wait until it's too late!

      Fall Mental Health Panel Discussion Announced

      Mental HealthAre you an important adult in the life of an adolescent? Our Student Health Council invites you to their Fall Mental Health Panel, in the WSHS Library on Thursday, November 16th, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Learn more about how to effectively approach and support teens struggling with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and other mental health issues. The panel will be facilitated by Ben Berger, one of our School-Based Health Center’s Mental Health Therapists.       PTSA Fall Fundraiser

      glass pumpkinsThe gorgeous glass pumpkins are available for sale again this year! A parent donates them at low cost to allow the PTSA to benefit from all sales. Pumpkins are on display in the office and may be purchased with cash or checks made payable to the WSHS PTSA. Pumpkins are $40 each. Come in and pick out a good one!

      Welcome Special Ed PTSA Liaison

      Special EducationThe WSHS PTSA is welcoming new parent Anne Sheeran as our liaison to the Seattle Special Education PTSA. The Seattle Special Ed PTSA is for students, parents, and staff who support differently-abled learners. As liaison for WSHS, Anne will collaborate with the PTSA and the administration on activities to further the WSHS climate of inclusion and understandings of special education. Anne invites parents of students receiving special education services to contact her about broadening our sped parent networks here at WSHS, to foster communication and support with one another and to strengthen communications between families and the administration.       Special Education Parent Partners Program

      Attention ParentsSeattle Public Schools has established a “parent partners” program to support parents and guardians of students with IEPs (Individual Education Plan) to navigate SPS, the IEP process, and to access community resources. It is the goal of this program to foster an atmosphere of family/professional collaboration in special education in Seattle Public Schools. The Special Education Parent Partners represent our culturally and linguistically diverse families who speak, English as well as Spanish, Somali, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Toishanese. The program is looking for Vietnamese speakers. The program represents students and families from African American, Native American, and many other cultures.       College Application Completion Workshop Returns!

      College ApplicationsAttention Seniors: Back by popular demand! WSHS will host another College Application Completion Workshop during early release Wednesday, November 15th from 2:30-4:30 in Lab 101. Receive help completing and submitting your college applications, and revising your essays/personal statements. Just in time for the UW deadline! See WSHS counselors or CAN staff with questions.

      13th Year Scholarship

      Attention Senior Families: is your student planning to apply for the 13th year scholarship Scholarshipat South Seattle next year? Students can receive help completing and submitting their scholarship application at the College Application Completion Event during early release Wednesday on November 15th, from 2:30-4:30 in Lab 101. Staff from South Seattle will be at WSHS to help students with their submissions.

      Upcoming UW Admission Event

      CollegeOn Saturday, November 11th from 9 AM to 4 PM, the UW Admission Workshop Weekend will take place for seniors applying to UW. Register online and learn more about the event.

      Senior Pictures Due for Yearbook

      You may submit a senior portrait for the yearbook. Digital copies must be submitted byDeadline November 30th or the default school picture will be used in the yearbook. There are guidelines for acceptable submissions:

      • Vertical orientation, simple backgrounds
      • Head, shoulders and waist shots only - no full body or images with props - one inch minimum head size
      • Images must be digitally submitted and the image must be at least 300 dpi - JPG or GIF files
      • No iPhone images or passport photos will be published
      • No costumes, other people or pets
      • Color images only, no B/W

      Submit images via email to with a subject line: Senior Picture - [student name].

      Student Activities and Opportunities

      Green Seattle Partnership Service Hours

      Service LearningStudents looking for service hours can work right here in West Seattle at the Fairmount Park Playfield. Seattle Parks is delivering 400+ native plants to the park and lots of non-native plants need to be removed in preparation. There are weekly work parties scheduled on alternating Sundays and Fridays through December. The next event is this Friday but check out the GSP website for more options and the waiver (if under 18 and not accompanied by and adult). Remember that service hours are required for graduation so get started now!

      Westside Community Unity Choir is forming!

      MusicDoes your student like to sing? Would they want to express themselves musically along with other folks in our learning community, and perform at our MLK and Equity Day assemblies? If so, please encourage them to come to our first choir creation meeting at 4:30 PM, Thursday, October 26! The group will meet in the Commons, and then head for a classroom. Students can get more info or offer suggestions to Ms. Amber Donaldson in the Y office, and/or Ms. Hall. Sing OUT, Westside!
