    Curriculum Night is Thursday

    megaphoneThis Thursday we will hold Curriculum Night from 6:15 to 8:35 PM. Families should gather in the Commons at 6:15 PM where they will be able to pick up a copy of their student’s schedule and a map of the building. Administration, counselors and other school support staff will be in the Commons to greet families. Spirit gear and PTSA memberships will be sold as well. At 6:45 PM the bell will ring and families will proceed to first period. Advisory period will be 15 minutes to accommodate announcements. All other periods will be 10 minutes with a 5 minute passing in between. Each period teachers will introduce their course and share classroom expectations.

    College App Support during Curriculum Night

    College Applications

    Attention parents of Seniors! Does your student need help filling out their college applications? Come to the WSHS library on the evening of September 28th from 6:30-8:30 PM for drop in support! College admissions reps, CAN Staff, and WSHS counselors will be on hand to assist students in completing online applications and writing admissions essays. This session is open so students can come by whenever possible and stay as long as they’d like. This is taking place during Curriculum Night so parents are welcome to stop by as well.

    Applications Due for National Honor Society

    National Honor SocietyNational Honor Society applications are due this WEDNESDAY! NHS is a national organization of high achieving high school students. Founded in 1921 NHS fosters scholarship, service, leadership, and character in outstanding high school students. Sophomores, juniors and seniors with 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA’s are invited to apply to join WSHS’s chapter. Throughout the year students will represent WSHS at local and school related service events. Students must re-apply every year. Please pick up and return applications to the main office or room 242. Applications are due WEDNESDAY, September 27th. Questions, contact rnphelps@seattleschools.org.

    WSHS Boosters Night at Chipotle!

    ChipotleMake dinner a selfless act by joining us for a fundraiser to support West Seattle Booster Club. Come in to the Chipotle at 4730 California Ave SW Ste A in the West Seattle Junction on Tuesday, October 3rd between 4:00 and 8:00 PM. Bring in the flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause to make sure that 50% of the proceeds will be donated to West Seattle Booster Club. Please spread the word, tell your family and friends, and come help us support the athletic programs, cheer and band at WSHS.

    Flu Shots Available at WSHS

    Flu ShotYou can help to protect our school community from the flu this season by getting vaccinated! On Wednesday, October 11th from 3 to 6 PM, the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will be providing flu shots outside the WSHS Theater. This clinic is open to all WSHS staff, students, families, and community members. Most insurance providers will cover the full cost (bring your card!). Without insurance, the fee is $30. All participants must complete a patient consent form. Participants under the age of 18 must have their form signed by a parent/guardian.

    Autoshop Students Providing Oil Changes

    auto serviceThe advanced Automotive Technology students have started doing project work in the shop. If your car needs service or repairs and you would like the auto students to work on your car, please contact instructor Jonathan Knapp with a description of your needs. From there, he will discuss the timeline involved and, if you wish to move ahead, figure out a schedule for you to bring it in. Please contact Mr. Knapp at jpknapp@seattleschools.org to start the process.

    Westside News Inaugural Edition

    Student ActivitiesLast week kicked off the first edition of the morning news announcements in broadcast format. ASB students work together to provide a video of the morning announcements to engage our students' attention. Thanks to Ms. Ferda who works with students to make this a reality.     Share Your Views: Advanced Learning

    Speak UpSPS is in the process of reviewing the Student Assignment Plan and developing related future high school boundaries. The SAP guides student enrollment and ensures students have access to the services they need close to home. One area of the SAP under review is how we serve high school advanced learners. SPS is seeking to better understand the values and thoughts of our families. You are encouraged to participate in the survey process being facilitated by ThoughtExchange. You will need to create an account. Please look for the invitation to participate in the next week and share your views on this important topic.

    Parent Volunteers Needed

    Volunteers NeededWSHS has an opportunity for parents to volunteer as PSAT Proctors at 8 AM on Wednesday, October 11th when we will be giving the PSAT test to over 500 sophomores and juniors. If you have a student who is being tested, you will not be able to volunteer. Contact Amy Doll at 206-252-8813 for further details.

    Students will enjoy a fun week of activities celebrating Homecoming Week October 2nd through the 6th. The theme is "Home, Sweet Homecoming".

    Homecoming Dance October 7

    Glo DanceThis year's Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, October 7th from 8 to 11 PM in the WSHS Commons. The theme this year is Glo'Co Blacklight so students should wear white or bright colors. Students should enter the building through the historical entrance. Encourage your students to attend this first dance of the school year!

    With the start of a new year, we want to ask you to join the Booster Club with an Annual Membership. If you’ve supported us in the past, thank you! We hope we can count on your support again. If you have not joined in the past, we hope you will consider doing so this year. Growing our membership is vital to the success of the Booster Club, and ultimately to the extent we can help the students. We help the teams with uniforms, equipment, and needs our school district’s limited budget cannot cover.

    College Visits at WSHS

    College Just AheadColleges and universities will be visiting WSHS throughout September and October. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about these schools, their admissions requirements, and to meet face to face with admissions representatives. If your student is interested in attending any of the sessions, have them sign up with their counselor. Signup sheets are posted outside counselors’ offices.

    Student Activities and Opportunities

    WSHS Selected as a Global Navigator School

    Study Abroad$25,000 in scholarships to go toward CIEE summer student abroad programs are provided to us with this recognition. This is an outstanding opportunity for students. World Language students will learn more in a presentation from CIEE representatives being held on October 9th. Students not yet in World Language can request a pass to attend the presentation if interested in learning abroad. The presentation is for freshman, sophomores and juniors only. Students across socio-economic levels can apply, awards are granted based on a need-blind basis. More information on the program can be found on the CIEE website. Application deadline is December 1.

    Careers in Sports

    The Seattle Sounders are offering our students and families a chance to hear about jobs in sports management. This event takes place prior to the match with FC DALLAS on Sunday Oct 15th. Tickets to this soccer match have been reduced so you can attend both the panel discussion and game. Interested students should contact Mrs. Maynard in the Career Center for details.

    Amazing Paid Internship at Amazon

    AmazonYouthForce has an amazing opportunity to hire 4 interns for an internship with Amazon. The internship will take place from October to January for 3 days a week for 2-3 hours. The pay rate is $15/hour. The opportunity is open to teens between the ages of 16-18 who are interested in the business, marketing and/or technology fields and reside in King County. Learn about the job description and application online. Interested students can get help with the application in the Career Center.

    NEW! Student Senate Leadership Opportunity

    AttentionStudents will have a new leadership opportunity this school year. Students will have the opportunity to run for representative of their advisement class. Each advisement class will elect one representative and one backup to attend student senate meetings. Student senate meetings will be held once a month during advisement.

    Service Learning at the WS Library

    Service LearningOur local West Seattle Library is looking for high school students to tutor math every Tuesday from 3:45-5:15 PM as "Math Buddies”. This is a great opportunity for students to earn their mandatory community service hours. Students should contact Mrs. Maynard in the Career Center for an application.
