    Financial Aid Support - October 10

    Financial Aid 101Seniors do you need help completing your FAFSA/WASFA? Attend the WSHS Financial Aid Night on Tuesday, October 10th from 6:30-8:30 PM in the WSHS library for one on one assistance with your free application for federal student aid. Everyone should fill out the FAFSA, regardless of their plans or income status. This is a drop in workshop, so feel free to come by at your convenience and stay as long as you’d like. The FAFSA goes live on 10/1/17 - please visit to access the application and to learn more. Download the financial aid packet for more information on FAFSA and WAFSA. It will be helpful to bring the following with you:

    • Social Security Number
    • Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
    • Federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned (note: you may be able to transfer your federal tax return info. into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool)
    • Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
    • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)

    First PTSA Meeting - October 11

    PTSA logoMark your calendars for the first General PTSA meeting of the fall! The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 PM in the Library at WSHS. Come hear from WSHS’s new Principal, Brian Vance, meet the PTSA Board, and vote on officers and the PTSA budget for this school year. Come voice your thoughts about how the PTSA can support your student and all of our students.

    Please consider joining the PTSA today. You can join online as a household member for $25 or a single member for $15. The online membership form was broken at the start of the year but it has now been fixed so that you may pay via Paypal. 

    Flu Shots Available at WSHS - October 11

    Flu ShotYou can help to protect our school community from the flu this season by getting vaccinated! On Wednesday, October 11th from 3 to 6 PM, the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will be providing flu shots outside the WSHS Theater. This clinic is open to all WSHS staff, students, families, and community members. Most insurance providers will cover the full cost (bring your card!). Without insurance, the fee is $30. All participants must complete a patient consent form. Participants under the age of 18 must have their form signed by a parent/guardian.

    PSAT for Sophomores & Juniors - October 11

    PSATSophomores and Juniors will be taking the PSAT on October 11th at WSHS. Students must be at school at 8 AM for check in and the test will begin at 8:45 AM. No late arrivals. No mobile phones or personal items will be allowed. Students must bring 2 #2 pencils with erasers, a scientific or graphing calculator, and their student ID. Supplies will not be provided. Please be sure that your student comes prepared.

    Annual LGBT Families Dinner Scheduled

    LGBT FamiliesThe annual lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Families Dinner will be held 6-8 PM. Thursday, Nov. 2 at Meany Middle School. Members of the school board will be there to welcome LGBT families and their friends. All SPS students, families and staff are welcome to attend! This this donation-funded event is brought to you by the Health Education Office. Dinner and entertainment will be provided.     Upcoming College Fairs/Events

    CollegeMark your calendars for two college events coming up. Friday and Saturday October 27th - 28th, the NACAC National College Fair will be held at the Washington State Convention Center. Students can meet with admissions reps from colleges and universities from across the US. Students in grades 10-12 are encouraged register online to attend. On Saturday, November 11th from 9 AM to 4 PM, the UW Admission Workshop Weekend will take place for seniors applying to UW. Register online and learn more about the event.

    PTSA Fall Fundraiser

    glass pumpkinsThe gorgeous glass pumpkins are available for sale again this year! A parent donates them at low cost to allow the PTSA to benefit from all sales. Pumpkins are on display in the office and may be purchased with cash or checks made payable to the WSHS PTSA. Pumpkins are $40 each. Come in and pick out a good one!

    MASH Has Begun!

    StudyOne of the highlights of WSHS is the MASH program led by Lane Tower in the tutoring center. MASH is a FREE afterschool study hall that happens every Tuesday and Thursday. Students have access to tutors to support them in their studies. Students can also use the time to work freely on homework or classwork. Test retakes can also be arranged with the support of the tutoring team. Encourage your student to leverage this support. MASH is open to all students.

    Booster ClubWith the start of a new year, we want to ask you to join the Booster Club with an Annual Membership. If you’ve supported us in the past, thank you! We hope we can count on your support again. If you have not joined in the past, we hope you will consider doing so this year. Growing our membership is vital to the success of the Booster Club, and ultimately to the extent we can help the students. We help the teams with uniforms, equipment, and needs our school district’s limited budget cannot cover.

    College Visits Continue at WSHS

    College Just AheadColleges and universities will be visiting WSHS throughout this month. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about these schools, their admissions requirements, and to meet face to face with admissions representatives. If your student is interested in attending any of the sessions, have them sign up with their counselor. Signup sheets are posted outside counselors’ offices.

    Belize Trip Information Night

    There is a unique opportunity for your student to earn high school and college credit while gaining lifetime experiences on an educational trip this summer to Belize. Mr. Rose and Mr. Marzofka will be leading an exclusive group of students on a trip that focuses on eco-travel through the diverse ecosystems of Belize. If you are interested, reserve your spot now at a last chance informational meeting on Thursday, October 12th at 6:30 PM in room 234 at West Seattle High School. There are only a couple spots still available and it will be first come first serve to fill the last spots.     Engineering & Architecture Mentor Program

    EngineeringThe ACE Mentor Program is a fabulous opportunity for high school students - 9th to 12th - to work with professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction on real-life design construction projects. Students in the ACE Mentorship Program often get summer jobs with participating firms. Review the brochure. Deadline for application is October 13th.

    Student Service at Genessee Hill ES

    Genesee Hill Elementary is looking for 8 High School students to volunteer at their Monster Mash dance. We need high school students to run the photo booth and food/refreshments stand. The time commitment is 3 hours on October 27th, 6-9 PM. Volunteers will need to meet in the main lobby at Genesee Hill Elementary (5013 SW Dakota St.). Contact Molly Schoeb at by October 10th.

    Discover U Planned

    FutureDiscover U is a fun week of classroom activities for students that will support them in their exploration of career and college options. Discover U puts student interests at the center and helps connect their aspirations with the many pathways to get there. Discover U will take place the week of October 23 - 27 and is brought to you by the College and Career Readiness Team and the West Seattle Counseling Department.

    Careers in Sports

    career optionsThe Seattle Sounders are offering our students and families a chance to hear about jobs in sports management. This event takes place prior to the match with FC DALLAS on Sunday, Oct 15th. Tickets to this soccer match have been reduced so you can attend both the panel discussion and game. Interested students should contact Mrs. Maynard in the Career Center for details.

    Service Learning at the WS Library

    Service LearningOur local West Seattle Library is looking for high school students to tutor math every Tuesday from 3:45-5:15 PM as "Math Buddies”. This is a great opportunity for students to earn their mandatory community service hours. Students should contact Mrs. Maynard in the Career Center for an application.
