    WSHS Boosters Night at Chipotle - Tomorrow!

    ChipotleMake dinner a selfless act by joining us for a fundraiser to support West Seattle Booster Club. Come into the Chipotle at 4730 California Ave SW Ste A in the West Seattle Junction on Tuesday, October 3rd between 4:00 and 8:00 PM. Bring in the flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause to make sure that 50% of the proceeds will be donated to West Seattle Booster Club. Please spread the word, tell your family and friends, and come help us support the athletic programs, cheer and
    band at WSHS.

    Homecoming Dance October 7

    Glo DanceThis year's Homecoming Dance will be held this Saturday, October 7th from 8 to 11 PM in the WSHS Commons. The theme this year is Glo'Co Blacklight so students should wear white or bright colors. Students should enter the building through the historical entrance. Encourage your students to attend this first dance of the school year!

    Financial Aid Support - October 10

    Financial Aid 101Seniors do you need help completing your FAFSA/WASFA? Attend the WSHS Financial Aid Night on Tuesday, October 10th from 6:30-8:30 PM in the WSHS library for one on one assistance with your free application for federal student aid. Everyone should fill out the FAFSA, regardless of their plans or income status. This is a drop in workshop, so feel free to come by at your convenience and stay as long as you’d like. The FAFSA goes live on 10/1/17 - please visit www.fafsa.gov to access the application and to learn more. It will be helpful to bring the following with you:

    • Social Security Number
    • Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
    • Federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned (note: you may be able to transfer your federal tax return info. into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool)
    • Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
    • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)

    First PTSA Meeting - October 11

    PTSA logoMark your calendars for the first General PTSA meeting of the fall! The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 11 at 7 PM in the Library at WSHS. Come hear from WSHS’s new Principal, Brian Vance, meet the PTSA Board, and vote on officers and the PTSA budget for this school year. Come voice your thoughts about how the PTSA can support your student and all of our students.

    Please consider joining the PTSA today. You can join online as a household member for $25 or a single member for $15. The online membership form was broken at the start of the year but it has now been fixed so that you may pay via Paypal. 

    Flu Shots Available at WSHS - October 11

    Flu ShotYou can help to protect our school community from the flu this season by getting vaccinated! On Wednesday, October 11th from 3 to 6 PM, the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will be providing flu shots outside the WSHS Theater. This clinic is open to all WSHS staff, students, families, and community members. Most insurance providers will cover the full cost (bring your card!). Without insurance, the fee is $30. All participants must complete a patient consent form. Participants under the age of 18 must have their form signed by a parent/guardian.

    Plan for the PSAT - October 11

    PSATSophomores and Juniors will be taking the PSAT on October 11th at WSHS. Students must be at school at 8 AM for check in and the test will begin at 8:45 AM. No late arrivals. No mobile phones or personal items will be allowed. Students must bring 2 #2 pencils with erasers, a scientific or graphing calculator, and their student ID. Supplies will not be provided. Please be sure that your student comes prepared.

    WSHS has an opportunity for parents to volunteer as PSAT Proctors. If you have a student who is being tested, you will not be able to volunteer. Contact Amy Doll at 206-252-8813 for further details.

    PTSA Fall Fundraiser

    glass pumpkinsThe gorgeous glass pumpkins are available for sale again this year! A parent donates them at low cost to allow the PTSA to benefit from all sales. Pumpkins are on display in the office and may be purchased with cash or checks made payable to the WSHS PTSA. Pumpkins are $40 each. Come in and pick out a good one!

    MASH Has Begun!

    StudyOne of the highlights of WSHS is the MASH program led by Lane Tower in the tutoring center. MASH is a FREE afterschool study hall that happens every Tuesday and Thursday. Students have access to tutors to support them in their studies. Students can also use the time to work freely on homework or classwork. Test retakes can also be arranged with the support of the tutoring team. Encourage your student to leverage this support. MASH is open to all students.

    NHS Induction Ceremony - Applications in Process

    National Honor SocietyWe had the largest number of applicants in recent memory for National Honor Society! We are currently processing applications. Acceptance for 2017-2018’s will be sent to Advisories on Tuesday. An email with more information about this year’s induction ceremony on October 10th will also be emailed to the address listed on the application. Good luck students!

    Auto Shop Students Providing Oil Changes

    Oil ChangeThe advanced Automotive Technology students have started doing project work in the shop. If your car needs service or repairs and you would like the auto students to work on your car, please contact instructor Jonathan Knapp with a description of your needs. From there, he will discuss the timeline involved and, if you wish to move ahead, figure out a schedule for you to bring it in.     Booster ClubWith the start of a new year, we want to ask you to join the Booster Club with an Annual Membership. If you’ve supported us in the past, thank you! We hope we can count on your support again. If you have not joined in the past, we hope you will consider doing so this year. Growing our membership is vital to the success of the Booster Club, and ultimately to the extent we can help the students. We help the teams with uniforms, equipment, and needs our school district’s limited budget cannot cover.

    College Visits Continue at WSHS

    College Just AheadColleges and universities will be visiting WSHS throughout this month. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about these schools, their admissions requirements, and to meet face to face with admissions representatives. If your student is interested in attending any of the sessions, have them sign up with their counselor. Signup sheets are posted outside counselors’ offices.

    Student Activities and Opportunities

    Student Service at Genessee Hill ES

    Genesee Hill Elementary is looking for 8 High School students to volunteer at their Monster Mash dance. We need high school students to run the photo booth and food/refreshments stand. The time commitment is 3 hours on October 27th, 6-9 PM. Volunteers will need to meet in the main lobby at Genesee Hill Elementary (5013 SW Dakota St.).     Discover U Planned

    FutureDiscover U is a fun week of classroom activities for students that will support them in their exploration of career and college options. Discover U puts student interests at the center and helps connect their aspirations with the many pathways to get there. Discover U will take place the week of October 23 - 27 and is brought to you by the College and Career Readiness Team and the West Seattle Counseling Department.

    WSHS Selected as a Global Navigator School

    Study Abroad$25,000 in scholarships to go toward CIEE summer student abroad programs are provided to us with this recognition. This is an outstanding opportunity for students. World Language students will learn more in a presentation from CIEE representatives being held on October 9th. Students not yet in World Language can request a pass to attend the presentation if interested in learning abroad. The presentation is for freshman, sophomores, and juniors only. Students across socio-economic levels can apply, awards are granted based on a need-blind basis. More information on the program can be found on the CIEE website. Application deadline is December 1.

    Careers in Sports

    career optionsThe Seattle Sounders are offering our students and families a chance to hear about jobs in sports management. This event takes place prior to the match with FC DALLAS on Sunday, Oct 15th. Tickets to this soccer match have been reduced so you can attend both the panel discussion and game. Interested students should contact Mrs. Maynard in the Career Center for details.

    Amazing Paid Internship at Amazon

    AmazonYouthForce has an amazing opportunity to hire 4 interns for an internship with Amazon. The internship will take place from October to January for 3 days a week for 2-3 hours. The pay rate is $15/hour. The opportunity is open to teens between the ages of 16-18 who are interested in the business, marketing and/or technology fields and reside in King County. Learn about the job description and application online. Interested students can get help with the application in the Career Center.

    Service Learning at the WS Library

    Service LearningOur local West Seattle Library is looking for high school students to tutor math every Tuesday from 3:45-5:15 PM as "Math Buddies”. This is a great opportunity for students to earn their mandatory community service hours. Students should contact Mrs. Maynard in the Career Center for an application.
