    Dear WSHS Families,

If you have already joined the WSHS PTSA for the 2020-2021 School Year, Thank You! If you have not yet joined, please consider joining now! An individual membership is $15 and a family membership is $25 (scholarships available). You can join online at: http://wshsptsa.org/membership-payment or complete the form. The PTSA Board is hoping to build our membership in order to strengthen connections between families and the school. Your membership would support these efforts.

    Why join the PTSA?

    • To strengthen your connection to the school. The WSHS PTSA keeps parents up to date on school issues through the Westside Weekly email and holds meetings throughout the year with opportunities to learn about issues impacting the school and students. The PTSA hosts a “Meet the Admin” panel discussion in September and offers programming on topics of interest throughout the year at our general membership meetings. Last year’s topics included racial equity and parenting, and the SPS Healthy Youth Survey and vaping. General membership meetings are typically held the 3rd Wednesday of month and will meet via Zoom during the period of remote learning.

    • To improve educational experiences for our students. The PTSA raises funds to help the school, staff, and students thrive in their educational endeavors. Through targeted spending and the PTSA grant award process, we fund student and family engagement activities, lab supplies, supplemental books, sound systems, art equipment, instruments, professional development materials, AP test fees, and more. The 2020-2021 PTSA grant request forms will be made available in the fall.

    • To be a part of education policy decisions. When you join our PTSA, you become a member of the Washington State PTA. This statewide organization selects legislative priorities –such as preventing gun violence and addressing social emotional learning– and promotes those issues in Olympia. PTA members have opportunities to suggest and select legislative priorities and influence those policies at the state level, including testifying before the legislature.

    • To get discounts. PTSA membership gives you access to discounts on car rentals (AVIS, Budget), printing (FedEx, Office Depot), retail (LEGO bags, Real Leather Company), entertainment (Wild Waves, Silverwood Theme Park, Angel of the Winds Arena) and more. When you join, you’ll get an email with your membership card and instructions for accessing discounts.

Please note: All PTSA General Meetings and Board Meetings are open to the entire school community – you do not need to be a member to attend meetings. Also, if you join the PTSA you are not required to attend any meetings. That said, we hope you will join our Zoom meetings and any in-person events that are possible this year to strengthen our bonds within the school community.

The mission for the WA PTA is to be: • A powerful voice for children, • A relevant resource for families, schools and communities, and • A strong advocate for the well-being and education of all children.

    Please join us!

    Sincerely,

    Michele Starkey
    WSHS PTSA Board President
