Hour of Code - Next Week
The week of Dec 5th is Computer Science Education Week. There is a national effort to increase the exposure of students to computing and computational thinking. There is much said about the huge number of computing jobs that go unfilled because we don’t graduate enough qualified CS engineers. In addition to that, nearly all jobs in the future will have some aspect of computing involved.
The first step to increasing the amount of computer education in our graduates is to increase the exposure of students to CS. To get that started, WSHS is offering an ‘Hour of Code’ during 1-4th periods all week from Dec 5th though the 9th. Teachers will give students a brief overview of the CS landscape and then lead them in doing some fun exercises that expose them to what coding is all about.

Breaking News About the HPV Vaccine
Did you know almost 30,000 cancers per year could be prevented by the HPV vaccine? Now, new guidelines from the Center for Disease Control show that younger teens only need 2 shots - 6 months apart - as long as they complete the series by 15 years of age. This is because younger teens develop a stronger immune response than older teens. Students 15 years old or older still need 3 shots. Need help getting your student up to date on shots? Call Neighborcare at West Seattle High School Based Health Center at 206-658-8048 to make an appointment or if you have questions. Learn more about why HPV is recommended. Register for an appointment.
