Hour of Code - This Week
The week of Dec 5th is Computer Science Education Week. There is a national effort to increase the exposure of students to computing and computational thinking. There is much said about the huge number of computing jobs that go unfilled because we don’t graduate enough qualified CS engineers. In addition to that, nearly all jobs in the future will have some aspect of computing involved.
The first step to increasing the amount of computer education in our graduates is to increase the exposure of students to CS. To get that started, WSHS is offering an ‘Hour of Code’ during 1-4th periods all week from Dec 5th though the 9th. Teachers will give students a brief overview of the CS landscape and then lead them in doing some fun exercises that expose them to what coding is all about.

2017-2018 School Hours Change
To improve K-12 students’ academic access and achievement, the Seattle Education Association (SEA) and Seattle Public Schools (SPS) agreed to add 20 minutes of core instructional time to the school day starting in the 2017-18 school year. This action also brings our instructional hours into alignment with other districts in the region.
In 2017-18, all K-12 students will be dismissed one hour early in support of teacher collaboration. The early release once a week will be on Wednesdays. The addition of twenty minutes will be split between the morning and afternoon. 10 minutes will be added to the morning schedule and 10 minutes to the afternoon schedule. Learn more.

PTSA Seeks 5K Chair
The West Seattle 5K is an important community event and fundraiser for the school. Jeff Mensing, who has chaired the event for several years, is ready to pass the torch. The PTSA hires a company to do the heavy lifting in organizing the event and the school's volunteer coordinator, Amy Doll is available to assist the new chair. We cannot hold this event without a point person so please consider a chair or co-chair role. The PTSA website has a job description available here. If you are interested in learning more, contact Julie Howell, PTSA president today!
Support WSHS with a Direct Donation
The PTSA Spanish Nights Auction was a fun event for all who attended. Since attendance was low, the PTSA fell far short of their fundraising goal. Please consider making a direct donation to support the school grant program. Donate here!
